The former
baptistry of the cathedral now serves as a beautiful setting for the
Blessed Sacrament’s place of reservation. One may find in this
special place of prayer a number of beautiful treasures from the
cathedral’s past.
Marking the entrance to this
special place of adoration is the newly recovered restored original
cathedral sanctuary lamp, which hangs from the archway overhead. In
the center of the chapel is the nine-hundred-pound polished and
brushed bronze tabernacle, the place of reposition for the Blessed
Sacrament. It is decorated with symbols of the Eucharist (wheat,
grapes, the host, the Eucharistic cup) and of Christ. The tabernacle
is enthroned on three pillars of Breccia Serravezza marble fashioned
from the columns that were originally part of the baldachin. The
configuration of these pillars harmonizes with the circular patterns
in the marble floor of the chapel.
